During the 2017/2018 academic year we received some funding from Active Essex to run a #ThisGirlCan project in our school. The #ThisGirlCan movement is based around increasing participation of women in Sport and Leisure, and also raising the profile of Women’s sport across the country.
We selected 10 girls within our school to ideally raise their participation in some area of sport, develop their confidence to actively get involved in activity or enhance their communication and leadership skills to inspire others. The group met weekly at lunchtime and chose the activities they wanted to participate in, these included Netball, funky relays and circuit training. As a result of attending as many sessions as possible the girls could then attend a female sporting event. Therefore we travelled to Wembley to watch the Women’s FA Cup Final 2018, Arsenal Ladies vs Chelsea Women. This was a superb spectacle of Sport, with Chelsea the eventual winners 3-1!
As the project drew to a close all of the girls grew in confidence and appeared to have a more positive approach to Sport and PE. Hopefully they can maintain this positive mindset as they move up the school and further increase their own involvement in Sport.
