Fizz Pop Science Club - Show me the LightIn last week's science club we discussed the properties of light. The children donned a pair of diffraction glasses to look at the visible spectrum colours of light (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet). We discussed how these colours travel in wavelengths and at different frequencies. To imitate this, we all did a bit of wiggling ourselves. We also looked at how white light disperses as we move away from the source and we contrasted this with a laser beam, which remains constant. Next, we discussed light waves that are invisible to us such as Infra-red, Ultra Violet and X-Rays. Using a fluorescein solution and a UV light, we got to examine UV light and I explained how fluorescence works. To help the children understand this we all became detectives to identify some counterfeit Fizz Pop Science money using some UV light pens to find fluorescent marks. We ended the session by making a UV bead bracelet/bag accessory, which will change colour when exposed to UV light, i.e. sunlight.

Bag2School - Fundraising for our school! Our children are now becoming much more interested in social action and making a difference to the world around them. They are independently fundraising for children in need around the world and the homeless. We would like to encourage this interest by providing them with opportunities to fundraise without putting financial pressure on our families. We have chosen this scheme for that reason. We are pleased to announce that we have organised a clothes & shoe collection with Bag2School in order to raise funds for Enterprise Week! This is an exciting week where all children in the school plan, design and create something to sell in order to raise more funds for charity. Very Dragon's Den style!
Working in partnership with school recycling specialists Bag2School, the School Recycling Competition is taking place in January 2018 will offer £0.40 per kilogram of clothes that registered schools collect. This means that one tonne of clothing could earn your school £400!
The school that has collected the highest amount of good quality clothing per pupil by the end of January 2018 will also receive a special prize of a free textile workshop in addition to money raised.
Therefore could we please ask that you have a little clear out for us! We will be asking for any donations to be brought into school on MONDAY 22nd JANUARY. Please note that we are unable to store bags before this date. They accept the following ‘good quality’ items for RE-USE:- Men’s, Ladies’ and Children’s clothing
- Paired shoes (tied together or elastic band around)
- Handbags
- Hats
- Bags
- Scarves and ties
- Jewellery
- Lingerie
- Socks
- Belts
- Soft toys
- Household linen
- Curtains
- Towels
- Bedding (bed sheets, pillow cases and duvet covers)
- Duvets and blankets
- Pillows and cushions
- Carpets, rugs and mats (including bath, shower and toilet mats)

Time to read at home! The Jelly Bean Challenge is Live!!!Reading is a vital part of every child’s education and something we take seriously here at Burnham Primary. To make sure your child learns the reading skills that will last them a lifetime, we teach a range of reading and comprehension lessons each week and offer a well-stocked, exciting library. But, reading means more than this. A love of books is a true love of life and shows a sense of adventure. To encourage the full enjoyment of reading and a lifelong love of books, we are once again running our highly successful ‘Jelly Bean Challenge’. Each class works together as a team to earn jelly beans. These are collected in a display outside the Year 1 classrooms and the year group with the most jelly beans each term wins a special celebration. Last term, this was Year 5, who earned a crazy balloon party. So, how does your child win jelly beans? Simple. Read at home. Each child is expected to read at home daily. This may be with an adult, or older sibling. It could be independently. What is key is the recording of this reading in their School Reading Record. If your child comes to school with a signed reading record from the night before, they get to tick their name off on a class chart. The more of the whole class that reads, the more jelly beans they earn. Each Friday, in our Awards Assembly, we will update the whole school as to which year group is currently in first place. Bonus jelly beans are available for those year groups that read over the whole weekend, so please try to make sure that reading has a time allocated every day of the week. This is a fun, successful scheme, much-liked by all of our pupils, so I’d like to thank you for your continued support of reading at home. If you have any particular questions about your child’s reading, or would like to discuss the books they are, or could be, reading, please contact your class teacher in the first instance. Enjoy all your reading adventures together! Thanks Mr Patterson Lead Practitioner

A Message from the Headteacher
On behalf of the children, staff and governors of Burnham on Crouch Primary School I would like to welcome you to our school and website. The website cannot replace direct contact with you but we hope it will act as a foundation for good relations between home and school.
Our vision for our school is to become an ‘outstanding’ school to ensure your children receive the very best education and experiences. We are a successful learning community that is an extended family in which everyone is valued, enjoys coming to school and is given every opportunity to flourish both academically and as an individual.
Our success is based on a shared willingness to expect the best for your children in our care. We work closely with the community, parents and carers to make sure everyone is part of our journey to raise standards and create a school where everyone counts; where everyone has the chance to succeed, to discover their best self and learn how to lead a life of integrity, respect and happiness…

All parents and carers want their children to be successful and happy. It is important to choose a school which nurtures the right skills, develops confidence and self-esteem and offers an exciting and enriching curriculum to ensure children are ready for the wider world beyond.
At BCPS the children are at the heart of every decision we make, whether it be for their safety, enjoyment or academic excellence. We believe wholeheartedly in the holistic development of the whole child including teaching character such as kindness, honesty and tolerance, and learner attributes including resilience and emotional well-being. We aim to help children find their voice, talents and thrive….
