Our School Allotment
Last June, following discussions with Burnham Town Council, Mrs Wells managed to secure the use of a piece of council land adjacent to the school for a school allotment. As part of the work we already do as a ‘Healthy School’, the children had already begun to plant and grow a variety of vegetables in pots around the school so this exciting news mean’t that these would have a permanent home!
The allocated land was VERY overgrown and needed a lot of work to prepare it for planting so an ‘Allotment Working Party’ was held on Saturday 19th July when a number of pupils and their families came along and helped us start to clear the land.
This was a really enjoyable community day which ended with a BBQ in the sunshine to reward all of the workers.
As well as helping raise our children’s awareness of how plants grow and where our food comes from, we really hope that eventually we may be able to use some of this produce in our home cooked school dinners.
